About Stellar
Stellar launched in 2014 with a narrow, unfashionable goal: move money between currencies quickly and cheaply. It has largely stayed on that task while the rest of the industry moved toward general-purpose computation, and its design reflects that focus.
How it works
Stellar does not use mining or staking. It runs a federated consensus in which each node chooses which other nodes it trusts, and agreement emerges from the overlap between those choices. Transactions settle in a few seconds for a fraction of a cent. The network has a built-in order book, so an asset issued on Stellar can be exchanged for another automatically as part of a payment — the mechanism that lets a transfer start in one currency and arrive in another.
Supply
XLM has a fixed supply established at launch, with no ongoing issuance. Its history includes a notable decision in 2019 to burn a large portion of the tokens the foundation held, roughly halving the total. Inflation was also discontinued, so the supply is now static apart from the tiny fees each transaction destroys.
What to watch
The measure that matters is whether real payment volume is flowing through it, rather than the token’s price. Watch the anchors — the institutions that issue and redeem currency-backed assets on the network — because a payment corridor only works if there is someone to convert into local currency at both ends. Stellar’s addition of smart contracts also matters, though it arrived late relative to competitors.
Where it is used
Stellar is used for remittances, for issuing currency-backed tokens, and by organisations distributing aid or payments at low cost. Several dollar stablecoins circulate on it, and its low fees make small transfers practical in a way they are not on more expensive networks.
The honest caveats: XLM’s value is not obviously tied to payment volume, since fees are negligible by design and the token is not needed in quantity to move money. Stellar’s consensus depends on the trust choices of node operators rather than on economic cost, which is a different security model from proof of work or stake and is less battle-tested against a determined attacker. And it competes directly with both established payment rails and other blockchains for the same corridors.

The asset 2
What is Stellar?
Stellar launched in 2014 with a narrow, unfashionable goal: move money between currencies quickly and cheaply. It has largely stayed on that task while the rest of the industry moved toward general-purpose computation, and its design reflects that focus.
Where can I see how XLM has moved?
The price chart above is built from daily closes on a verified exchange pair, and every figure on this page states when it was last updated. Our markets dashboard puts this asset beside the rest of the market.
Price and supply 2
What is the price of Stellar today?
$0.1625
Read server-side from CoinLore on a fixed schedule and cached, so it is an indicative reference figure rather than a quote you can trade on — the exact price depends on your venue. Our methodology documents the provider chain and refresh intervals.
How many XLM are there?
32.39B XLM
That is the circulating supply — the units actually in the market. The maximum supply is 50,001,806,812, so the gap between the two is dilution that has not landed yet.
Risk and history 3
How volatile is Stellar?
41.4% annualised
Realised volatility from the last 30 daily closes. The largest peak-to-trough fall inside the 365 days of history we hold is -68.2%. Both measure how far price has already travelled, not which way it goes next.
What has XLM traded between this month?
$0.1590 – $0.1964
The lowest and highest prints of the last 30 daily candles, with price currently around 7% of the way up that range. They are simply the extremes of the period — not levels anyone is defending. The technicals section shows the moving averages alongside them.
Is Stellar a good investment?
We do not answer that, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Crypto assets are volatile and you can lose your entire position. Do your own research, size any position so a total loss would not hurt you, and treat every price target you read as the opinion of whoever made it. Our disclaimer sets out our full position.
