Unit rate

Rates are derived from USD reference prices supplied by CoinGecko and refreshed every five minutes. Only USD is offered as a fiat currency, because a USD reference price is the only fiat rate we actually source — we will not synthesise other currencies. Conversions are indicative and are not a quote you can trade on. How our data works

What this converter does

Enter an amount, pick what you are converting from and what you want it in, and the result updates as you type. You can convert crypto to crypto — how much Ethereum a given amount of Bitcoin is worth — or either direction between crypto and US dollars. The unit rate is shown underneath so you can sanity-check the arithmetic rather than trusting a single number.

How to use it

  1. Type the amount you hold, or the amount you are considering.
  2. Choose the asset in the From list.
  3. Choose what you want it expressed in from the To list.
  4. Use Swap to reverse the direction without retyping anything.

Where the rates come from

Every asset carries a USD reference price from our market-data pipeline, and a crypto-to-crypto conversion is calculated by going through that USD price. Rates refresh every five minutes, and the panel tells you which provider supplied them and how long ago. Our full methodology documents the provider chain and what happens when a provider fails.

Only US dollars are offered as a fiat currency, and that is deliberate. USD reference prices are the only fiat rates we actually source. Adding euros or pounds would mean applying an exchange rate we have not sourced, and a converted number that looks precise while resting on an assumption is worse than no number at all.

What it will not tell you

These are aggregated reference prices, not quotes from a venue. The figure you get here is not the figure you will receive on an exchange: you will pay a spread, a trading fee and possibly a withdrawal fee, and in a fast market the price will have moved between reading this and pressing a button. Treat the output as an estimate for planning, never as an execution price.

Frequently asked questions

How often do the rates update? Every five minutes. The timestamp under the tool shows exactly how stale the current figures are, and it will flag itself as delayed if they age past ten minutes.

Why can I not convert to euros or pounds? Because we do not source those rates. See above — we would have to invent them.

Is my input sent anywhere? No. The conversion happens in your browser using prices already embedded in the page.
