About ChainLink

A blockchain cannot see outside itself. A lending contract that needs to know the price of ether has no way to look it up, and that gap — the oracle problem — is what Chainlink was built to close. It is infrastructure rather than an application, which makes it less visible than it is important.

How it works

Independent node operators retrieve data from multiple sources, and their answers are aggregated on-chain into a single reported value, with outliers discarded. Operators are paid in LINK and are expected to maintain accuracy to keep earning. The design assumes no single node is trustworthy, which is the whole point: a price feed sourced from one place is a single point of failure, and several protocols have been drained precisely because theirs was.

Supply

LINK has a fixed maximum of one billion tokens, created at launch rather than mined. A substantial portion was retained by the project to fund development and pay network incentives, and those holdings have been released gradually over the years, so circulating supply has risen steadily. Check the circulating and maximum figures on this page together — the gap between them is the part that matters.

What to watch

The useful measure is adoption: how much value across DeFi depends on Chainlink feeds, since that is what the network secures. Also watch the expansion beyond price feeds into verifiable randomness, cross-chain messaging and proof-of-reserve attestations, and watch whether those services generate fees that flow to node operators rather than being subsidised.

Where it is used

Chainlink price feeds underpin a large share of lending markets, derivatives protocols and stablecoins. When a protocol liquidates a position, the price that triggered it very often came from here.

Two risks deserve naming. The first is the token’s relationship to the network: heavy use of the oracles does not automatically translate into demand for LINK, and the link between the two is a genuine argument rather than a settled fact. The second is systemic — because so much of DeFi relies on the same feeds, an oracle failure would not be contained to one protocol. That concentration is the cost of having solved the problem well.

Frequently asked questions

Key figures stay on the row when a question is closed. Every number updates with the live ChainLink price.

The asset 2

What is ChainLink?

A blockchain cannot see outside itself. A lending contract that needs to know the price of ether has no way to look it up, and that gap — the oracle problem — is what Chainlink was built to close. It is infrastructure rather than an application, which makes it less visible than it is important.

Where can I see how LINK has moved?

The price chart above is built from daily closes on a verified exchange pair, and every figure on this page states when it was last updated. Our markets dashboard puts this asset beside the rest of the market.

Price and supply 2

What is the price of ChainLink today?

$8.24

Read server-side from CoinLore on a fixed schedule and cached, so it is an indicative reference figure rather than a quote you can trade on — the exact price depends on your venue. Our methodology documents the provider chain and refresh intervals.

How many LINK are there?

678.10M LINK

That is the circulating supply — the units actually in the market. The maximum supply is 1,000,000,000, so the gap between the two is dilution that has not landed yet.

Risk and history 3

How volatile is ChainLink?

46.3% annualised

Realised volatility from the last 30 daily closes. The largest peak-to-trough fall inside the 365 days of history we hold is -73.1%. Both measure how far price has already travelled, not which way it goes next.

What has LINK traded between this month?

$7.52 – $8.92

The lowest and highest prints of the last 30 daily candles, with price currently around 51% of the way up that range. They are simply the extremes of the period — not levels anyone is defending. The technicals section shows the moving averages alongside them.

Is ChainLink a good investment?

We do not answer that, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Crypto assets are volatile and you can lose your entire position. Do your own research, size any position so a total loss would not hurt you, and treat every price target you read as the opinion of whoever made it. Our disclaimer sets out our full position.
