About Monero
Monero launched in 2014 and took the opposite design decision to Zcash: privacy is not a feature you can switch on, it is how the network works. Every transaction is private, which means there is no transparent pool to stand out from.
How it works
Three mechanisms operate together. Ring signatures mix a real input with decoys so it is unclear which one is being spent. Stealth addresses generate a fresh one-time address for every payment, so a published address cannot be used to watch someone’s balance. And confidential transactions hide the amount while still letting the network prove the sums balance. Mining uses an algorithm deliberately designed to run well on ordinary processors, which has kept participation less concentrated than in networks dominated by specialised hardware.
Supply
Monero has no hard cap. Emission followed a declining curve until it reached a permanent tail of a small fixed reward per block, which continues indefinitely. That tail is a deliberate choice: it guarantees miners are still paid once issuance has largely stopped, rather than relying on transaction fees alone, which is a genuinely unresolved question for Bitcoin’s distant future.
What to watch
Exchange access is the practical constraint. Privacy coins have been delisted from a growing number of regulated venues, and in some jurisdictions they are effectively unavailable, which fragments liquidity and can make the quoted price hard to obtain in size. On the technical side, Monero’s privacy guarantees have been tightened repeatedly in response to published analysis, so protocol upgrades matter more here than on most chains.
Where it is used
Monero is used where transaction privacy is the requirement. That includes ordinary uses that most people take for granted in cash — not publishing your salary, your balance or your spending — and it also includes illicit use, which the project’s critics emphasise and which has driven much of the regulatory response.
The risks are unusual and worth stating. Regulatory pressure is the largest: delistings have already happened and may continue, and liquidity can be thinner than the market capitalisation suggests. Privacy also cuts against recovery — there is no way to trace or reverse a mistaken payment. And because balances cannot be publicly audited, the supply itself relies on the correctness of the cryptography; an inflation bug found in 2017 was caught and patched, which is reassuring about the process and a reminder of the exposure.

Is Monero a good investment?
We do not answer that, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Crypto assets are volatile and you can lose your entire position. Do your own research, size any position so a total loss would not hurt you, and treat every price target you read as the opinion of whoever made it. Our disclaimer sets out our full position.
