About XRP

The XRP Ledger began operating in 2012, built specifically for moving value between parties quickly and cheaply rather than for running arbitrary programs. Its design goal was settlement speed, and it has kept that focus while most of the industry moved toward general-purpose computation.

How it works

XRP uses neither proof of work nor proof of stake. A set of validators agrees on transaction ordering through repeated rounds of voting, and each participant chooses which validators it trusts. Transactions typically settle in a few seconds at very low cost. The trade-off is explicit: the security model depends on the composition of that validator set rather than on the cost of computation or capital at stake, which is a genuine point of debate rather than a settled question.

Supply

All 100 billion XRP were created at inception. There is no mining and no ongoing issuance; a small amount of XRP is destroyed as a transaction cost, so the supply slowly decreases. A substantial portion was allocated to Ripple, the company most associated with the ledger, and released over time — a concentration that critics point to and that anyone assessing the asset should understand.

What to watch

XRP has been the subject of prolonged regulatory litigation in the United States, and its legal characterisation has been contested in ways that have not applied to most other large crypto assets. Because the asset is aimed at cross-border payments, actual settlement usage by financial institutions matters more here than developer activity does. We report regulatory developments as they happen and attribute them; we do not predict how any case resolves.

Where it is used

XRP’s intended use case is bridging currencies in cross-border payments, where the alternative is pre-funding accounts in every destination country. The ledger also includes a built-in order book and, more recently, automated market-making, so trading happens on the protocol itself rather than only on external venues. Issuing tokens and stablecoins on the ledger is supported natively without deploying contracts.

The honest criticism is twofold. Adoption by financial institutions has been announced more often than it has been demonstrated at scale, and the concentration of supply in the hands of one company gives that company unusual influence over the asset. Neither point makes the technology unsound, but both belong in any serious assessment of it.

We do not answer that, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Crypto assets are volatile and you can lose your entire position. Do your own research, size any position so a total loss would not hurt you, and treat every price target you read as the opinion of whoever made it.
