Each point is one daily reading from Alternative.me, oldest on the left. The index runs 0 (extreme fear) to 100 (extreme greed).

What the index measures

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index compresses market sentiment into a single number from 0 to 100. Low readings indicate fear — falling prices, defensive positioning, pessimistic commentary. High readings indicate greed, with rising prices and increasing appetite for risk. The gauge above shows the current reading and its classification; the chart shows the last thirty daily readings so you can see the direction of travel rather than just today’s value.

How to read it

The index is a description of mood, not a signal. The often-quoted idea that extreme fear marks a bottom and extreme greed a top is a narrative fitted to history after the fact: the index can sit in extreme fear for weeks while prices keep falling, and in extreme greed through an extended advance. Using it as a trigger to buy or sell is a good way to be early and wrong.

Where it is genuinely useful is as context for your own behaviour. If you find yourself feeling urgent about a decision, checking whether the whole market is at an emotional extreme is a cheap sanity check. It tells you something about the crowd you are trading against, not about what happens next.

Where the data comes from

The reading is published by Alternative.me, which computes it from a weighted blend of inputs including volatility, market momentum and volume, social media activity, and Bitcoin’s share of the total market. We retrieve it hourly and display it exactly as published — we do not recompute, smooth or adjust it, and we do not construct our own index. If the source is unavailable, this page shows nothing rather than a stale number presented as current. Our methodology covers the retrieval and caching detail.

Frequently asked questions

Does a low reading mean I should buy? No. The index is not a recommendation and neither are we. See our disclaimer.

Is this Bitcoin-specific or the whole market? It is a crypto-market-wide measure, though Bitcoin dominates several of its inputs.

Why does the value only change once a day? The source publishes daily readings, so intraday changes are not available. We refresh hourly to pick up each new reading promptly.
