About Ethena USDe
USDe is a dollar-denominated token, but it is not a stablecoin in the sense that Tether or USDC are. There is no bank account holding dollars behind it. Its value is maintained by a trading position, which makes it worth understanding properly before treating it as interchangeable with the others.
How it works
Ethena takes crypto collateral — largely staked ether and bitcoin — and simultaneously opens an equivalent short position in perpetual futures on centralised venues. If the collateral falls in value the short gains, and vice versa, so the combined position is designed to hold a roughly constant dollar value. This is a long-established trading structure, sometimes called a cash-and-carry or delta-neutral position. What is new is packaging it as a token anyone can hold.
Supply
Supply is uncapped and expands when authorised participants deposit collateral to mint, contracting when they redeem. Because every token must be backed by an open hedge, supply is constrained in practice by how much short interest the derivatives markets can absorb — a limit that has no equivalent in a reserve-backed stablecoin.
What to watch
The funding rate is the whole story. Ethena’s yield comes from the funding that longs pay shorts on perpetual futures, which is positive most of the time but not always. In a sustained bear market funding turns negative and the position pays out rather than earning, which is precisely when the protocol’s reserve fund gets tested. Also watch exchange counterparty risk: the hedges sit on centralised venues, so a venue failing is a direct threat to the backing, not a distant one.
Where it is used
USDe is used as collateral in lending markets and as a yield-bearing dollar position, generally by people who understand it is a trading strategy in token form. Its staked version accrues the funding income.
The risks are genuinely different from a reserve-backed token and should not be blurred. This design depends on derivatives markets functioning, on exchanges remaining solvent and able to return margin, and on funding staying positive often enough to fund the yield. Similar structures have worked for years and then unwound quickly when conditions changed. The advertised return is compensation for those risks, not a rate of interest, and it is not a deposit.

The price chart above is built from daily closes on a verified exchange pair, and every figure on this page states when it was last updated. Our markets dashboard puts this asset beside the rest of the market.
Price and supply 2
What is the price of Ethena USDe today?
$0.9995
Read server-side from CoinGecko on a fixed schedule and cached, so it is an indicative reference figure rather than a quote you can trade on — the exact price depends on your venue. Our methodology documents the provider chain and refresh intervals.
How many USDE are there?
3.88B USDE
That is the circulating supply. This asset has no fixed maximum supply, so issuance is not capped and future dilution is open-ended.
Risk and history 3
How volatile is Ethena USDe?
0.5% annualised
Realised volatility from the last 30 daily closes. The largest peak-to-trough fall inside the 332 days of history we hold is -0.3%. Both measure how far price has already travelled, not which way it goes next.
What has USDE traded between this month?
$0.9562 – $1.07
The lowest and highest prints of the last 30 daily candles, with price currently around 41% of the way up that range. They are simply the extremes of the period — not levels anyone is defending. The technicals section shows the moving averages alongside them.
Is Ethena USDe a good investment?
We do not answer that, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Crypto assets are volatile and you can lose your entire position. Do your own research, size any position so a total loss would not hurt you, and treat every price target you read as the opinion of whoever made it. Our disclaimer sets out our full position.
