APR & APY Converter

APR and APY converter

APR (simple)

APY (compounded)

Difference

One year on the amount

APR is the simple annual rate. APY is what you actually receive once the rewards themselves earn rewards. They are not interchangeable, and crypto lending and staking pages quote both — sometimes without saying which. The gap widens with the rate and with how often compounding happens: 12% APR compounded daily is 12.75% APY, while 100% APR compounded daily is over 171% APY. Converting a quoted APY back to APR is the useful direction when you want to compare two offers on the same footing. This is pure arithmetic on the rate you supply; we publish no rates, and a quoted rate is a promise about the future that the arithmetic cannot check. Runs entirely in your browser. Not advice.

What this converter does

It converts a rate in either direction — APR to APY or APY back to APR — at daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or annual compounding, and shows the gap between the two in percentage points.

The difference

APR is the simple annual rate: 12% APR on 10,000 pays 1,200 over a year if nothing is reinvested. APY is what you actually end up with once the rewards themselves start earning rewards. Compounded daily, that same 12% APR becomes 12.75% APY.

The gap grows with both the rate and the compounding frequency, and at crypto rates it stops being a rounding error:

  • 12% APR, compounded annually — 12.00% APY
  • 12% APR, compounded monthly — 12.68% APY
  • 12% APR, compounded daily — 12.75% APY
  • 100% APR, compounded daily — over 171% APY

Why the reverse direction is the useful one

Staking and lending pages advertise whichever number is larger, and often without saying which they are quoting. Converting a headline APY back to an APR at the compounding frequency actually offered is how you compare two offers on the same footing — an 18% APY compounded daily is a smaller underlying rate than an 18% APR compounded daily, and the two are routinely presented as though they were the same product.

What the arithmetic cannot check

We publish no rates. This tool converts whatever figure you supply, and a quoted rate is a claim about the future: it can change without notice, it may depend on rewards paid in a token whose price moves, and it does not include the risk of the counterparty or protocol failing. A very high advertised APY is usually a statement about risk rather than a statement about return. Compounding also assumes the rewards are actually reinvested at the same rate, which for many products they are not.

Frequently asked questions

Which does my exchange quote? You have to check; there is no convention. If the page says “compounded daily” it is describing APY.

Is APY always higher? For a positive rate, yes — except at annual compounding, where they are equal.

Does this model taxes or token price changes? No. A 10% yield paid in a token that fell 30% is a loss, and no rate conversion will show that.

Is this advice? No. See our disclaimer.
