What is the Bitcoin halving?
The scheduled event where the reward paid to Bitcoin miners for producing a block is cut in half, roughly every four years.
Bitcoin’s block subsidy halves every 210,000 blocks. It began at 50 BTC and steps down at each interval, which is what makes the total supply converge on 21 million. Track it with our halving countdown.
Why it matters: the direct effect is on miners, whose revenue per block halves overnight while their costs do not — so the least efficient capacity leaves. The widely repeated claim that halvings reliably cause price rises rests on a handful of events in very different conditions, and the schedule is public years ahead, so treat confident predictions with scepticism.
