What is cold storage?
Keeping private keys on a device that has never been connected to the internet, so they cannot be stolen remotely.
Usually a hardware wallet, which signs transactions internally and only ever emits the signature, so the key never touches an online machine. “Hot” wallets, by contrast, keep keys on a phone or laptop that is exposed to the internet.
Why it matters: most crypto theft is remote — malware, phishing, compromised browser extensions. Cold storage removes that entire attack surface. It does not protect against approving a malicious transaction yourself, which is now a more common loss than key theft: read what you are signing.
