About Solana
Solana launched its main network in 2020 with a straightforward premise: push throughput as high as a single chain can go, rather than distributing load across layers. Fees are a fraction of a cent and confirmation is close to instant, which is why consumer-facing applications, high-frequency trading venues and NFT marketplaces have gravitated to it.
How it works
Solana combines proof of stake with a sequencing mechanism its designers call proof of history — a verifiable ordering of events that lets validators agree on time without waiting to talk to each other. Because the network processes transactions in parallel where they do not touch the same state, it can use hardware far more fully than a strictly sequential chain.
The cost of that design is real. Running a validator demands substantially more bandwidth and compute than on slower chains, which shapes who can afford to participate, and the network has suffered outages and degraded periods during its history. Those incidents are a documented part of its record, not a rumour.
Supply
SOL is issued to validators under a schedule that started high and declines toward a long-term rate. A portion of each transaction fee is burned. There is no fixed cap, so supply growth is a function of the issuance curve and staking participation.
What to watch
Validator count and stake distribution speak to decentralisation; failed-transaction rates and priority-fee levels speak to congestion. Because so much Solana activity is trading, its on-chain volume tends to track market enthusiasm more tightly than slower networks do.
Where it is used
Solana has become the default home for crypto activity where speed and cost matter more than maximal decentralisation: high-frequency trading, consumer applications with wallet-native onboarding, stablecoin payments, and hardware networks that need to post large volumes of small transactions. Its NFT and memecoin markets have at times been the busiest in the industry, which cuts both ways — it demonstrates capacity while making the chain’s volume unusually sensitive to speculative cycles.
The criticisms worth taking seriously are the validator hardware requirements, which push toward professional operators rather than hobbyists, and the outage history, which is real even though the network has gone long stretches without incident since. Judge it on uptime going forward rather than on either the marketing or the worst headlines.
