About Dogecoin
Dogecoin was created in December 2013 by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a parody of the cryptocurrency boom, complete with a meme mascot. The joke outlasted the moment. It is now one of the most widely held cryptocurrencies, which says something about how much of this market runs on attention rather than technology.
How it works
Dogecoin is a proof-of-work coin descended from Litecoin, using the Scrypt algorithm and a roughly one-minute block target, which makes confirmations quick and fees very low. Since 2014 it has been merge-mined with Litecoin: miners secure both networks with the same work, which gave Dogecoin far more security than a coin of its origins would otherwise command. That arrangement is central to understanding why it has not been trivially attacked.
Supply
Unlike Bitcoin, Dogecoin has no supply cap and no halvings. A fixed number of DOGE is issued in every block indefinitely. Because the amount added each year is constant while the total keeps growing, the percentage rate of inflation declines over time even though the absolute issuance does not. This was a deliberate choice to keep the coin usable for tipping and small payments rather than to make it scarce.
What to watch
Dogecoin’s price has repeatedly moved on social-media attention and celebrity commentary rather than on network fundamentals, and it has drawn sharp drawdowns after those episodes. It is worth stating plainly: there is no development roadmap here comparable to the smart-contract platforms, and the case for holding it is not a technical one.
Where it is used
In practice Dogecoin functions as a cheap, fast payment coin and a tipping currency, and it is accepted by a scattering of merchants and payment processors. Its transaction fees remain low enough that sending small amounts is genuinely practical, which is more than can be said for several technically ambitious chains during periods of congestion.
The risks deserve stating directly. Because merge-mining ties Dogecoin’s security to Litecoin’s hash rate, its safety depends on miners continuing to find that arrangement worthwhile. Its price history shows repeated sharp rises driven by attention rather than usage, followed by equally sharp declines, and holders have at times lost most of their position within weeks. There is no treasury-funded roadmap, no smart-contract platform and no yield — the asset is what it appears to be, and it should be evaluated as that rather than as an early-stage technology bet.
