About BNB
BNB was issued in 2017 as a token on Ethereum, giving Binance customers a fee discount. It later moved to its own chain and now does two jobs: it is the utility token of the largest centralised exchange by volume, and it pays gas on BNB Chain, a smart-contract network with fees far below Ethereum’s.
How it works
BNB Chain runs a proof-of-stake-authority model with a comparatively small set of validators. That is what makes it fast and cheap, and also what makes it more centralised than networks with thousands of independent validators — a trade-off worth being clear-eyed about. Because the chain is EVM-compatible, contracts written for Ethereum can usually be deployed with little modification, which is why a large share of its activity mirrors Ethereum’s DeFi patterns.
Supply
BNB’s defining supply feature is burning: tokens are permanently destroyed on a recurring basis, plus a portion of gas fees, with the stated aim of reducing the total substantially from its original issuance. Unlike Bitcoin’s fixed cap, this is a policy carried out by an entity rather than a rule enforced by consensus, and it should be read that way.
What to watch
BNB’s value is unusually tied to one company’s business, so exchange volumes and the regulatory treatment of that company matter more here than for most large assets. On the chain side, watch total value locked and how much activity is genuine usage rather than incentive farming.
Where it is used
Two distinct demand sources sit behind BNB. On the exchange, it buys fee discounts and access to token sales, which ties it directly to trading volume. On BNB Chain it pays gas for a large ecosystem of decentralised exchanges, lending protocols and games that exist largely because fees are low enough for small transactions to make sense.
The concentration risk is the thing to understand. Unlike assets whose value rests on a protocol no one controls, BNB’s value is closely coupled to the commercial and regulatory fortunes of a single company, and its supply policy is executed by that company rather than enforced by consensus. That is not a hidden flaw — it is the design — but it makes BNB a different kind of asset from Bitcoin or Ethereum, and it should be assessed on those terms.
