Hyperliquid is a blockchain built for one job: running an order-book derivatives exchange on-chain. Rather than deploying a trading application onto a general-purpose network and inheriting its latency, the project built the chain around the exchange, which is an unusual approach and the main thing that distinguishes it.

How it works

The network runs a proof-of-stake consensus optimised for fast finality, because an order book is unusable if confirmations take seconds. Orders, cancellations and liquidations are processed as chain transactions rather than by an off-chain matching engine, so the book itself is publicly verifiable — you can check what filled and at what price, which is not true of a centralised venue. HYPE is staked to secure the chain and pays fees on it.

Supply

HYPE has a fixed maximum supply, a large share of which was distributed to users of the exchange rather than sold to investors. A substantial portion remains subject to vesting schedules, so circulating supply is well below the maximum and will keep rising as those unlock. Protocol fee revenue has been used to buy HYPE on the open market, which works in the opposite direction. Both figures matter and neither should be read alone — check the circulating and maximum supply on this page before drawing conclusions from the market capitalisation.

What to watch

Trading volume and open interest indicate whether the exchange is actually being used, which is the only thing underpinning the token. Unlock schedules matter because the float is still expanding. And because this is a derivatives venue, the health of its liquidation engine during volatile periods is the real stress test — a perpetual exchange is judged by what happens on its worst day, not its average one.

Where it is used

Almost all activity is trading on the exchange itself, with a smaller ecosystem of applications deployed on the chain. That concentration is the point and also the risk: the token’s value is tied closely to one product’s continued success rather than to a diversified platform.

Some caution is warranted. This is a young network by comparison with the assets above it in the rankings, its history does not yet span a full market cycle, and leveraged derivatives are the fastest way for an ordinary participant to lose everything regardless of which venue they use.
