Minereum was an ongoing project I undertook in the Fall of 2014. I decided to write about all the ways I’ve been able to incorporate the practice of mindfulness into my daily life, including in my work, relationships, and life in general.
This video is a fun way to get started. The first thing you’ll notice is that there is zero pause between the video and the end of the paragraph. That’s deliberate, and it shows how much mindfulness I’m practicing in this video. Next, you’ll notice I’m using the word “practice” here. Because I believe meditation can be a “practice” in itself.
Mindfulness is a practice that teaches you how to focus your attention on your present moment. When you’re meditating, you’re learning how to pay attention to the present. It teaches you how to be in the here and now. When you’re meditating, you’re not trying to control the future or the past. You’re trying to learn how to be in the here and now.
Meditation is a skill. It is not something you have to do sitting cross-legged in a dark room. You can practice it anywhere you want. You can practice it by walking into a restaurant and looking at the people sitting there. You can practice it by playing video games. You can practice it by meditating in your own bedroom. You can practice it by doing yoga. You can practice it by even just sitting down at a desk and thinking about your life.
We all have a time when we are most creative. That time is when we are most focused. And the fact that we take that time to be creative means that we are giving ourselves some of the most difficult decisions we will ever make. Most people have a time when they are most depressed. We all have a time when we are most creative. We should all be taking that time to be creative.
In the past two months it seems as though the word “yoga” has been trending in Google searches. That’s not a coincidence, however. A recent study by Google found that more and more people are coming to the idea of practicing yoga to feel mentally clear and balanced. This is a good thing. It means that, for the first time in history, the world will be able to experience a state of calm, balanced, and confident in ourselves.
This idea of practicing yoga, while certainly good, is also a bit of a double-edged sword. As Google research notes, “one study showed that people who got some form of exercise were more likely to feel more happy and less depressed.” But it can also be a bit confusing to people because it seems as though the word “yoga” is everywhere these days.
To make things more confusing, the whole thing is actually called “yoga.” The word yoga is derived from the word “yoga” which in Sanskrit means “to bend.” The word “yoga” has been around since the 3rd century, so the idea of people practicing yoga is pretty old, and it’s not very unusual to hear people talking about it today.
But yoga has a different meaning in India. It is the practice of taking a series of poses to make your body more flexible. The practice of yoga does not require a lot of equipment to do though. Many people are able to do yoga for free or at least for a portion of the day. That’s why they call it this, and not yoga. In some parts of the world yoga can be done for free as well, though you are required to pay for specific classes.
